Presentation

Werner Herzog, German filmmaker, was born in Munich on 5th September 1942. Throughout a long and prolific career, beginning at the age of 19, he has made more than 63 films, experimenting with different formats including fiction, documentaries, short films and television films.

An explorer of the world, of its dangers, mysteries and twists. Tireless expeditionist of human limits, of their endurance and dementia. Researcher of himself, of his strength and his obstinacy for ideas and for creative impulses. His microscope; cinema. His limits; none.

Black Factory Cinema is committed to the creation of alternative spaces for training young filmmakers and is organizing the Filmmakers Workshop for its fourth consecutive year. These practical workshops have been directed by established Masters of International Cinema since 2014. Black Factory Cinema previously held Filmmakers Workshops with Abbas Kiarostami in Colombia en 2014, Barcelona en 2015 y Cuba 2016.

Description

«Today, with all these virtual realities that are emerging so fast, cinema and filmmakers have to find new answers. I try to articulate an “ecstasy of the truth”; something that illuminates us, something that goes beyond our conception of normality, of the factual world. To achieve this kind of truth (and I use the term “truth” cautiously, because even mathematicians or philosophers can’t tell us what truth is), I try to find a way to access the real world that reveals us, so that the audience leaves the cinema richer than when they entered. Something that they can´t forget easily».

Werner Herzog

In 2017,  Black Factory Cinema in alliance with EICTV, Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños, will hold the fourth practical Filmmakers Workshop filming in Cuba with Werner Herzog, with 50 international participants. This is the first practical realization workshop directed by the legendary Bavarian director.

For ten days, 50 participants will have the opportunity of developing a project under the guidance and supervision of Werner Herzog.

The workshop is eminently practical, so it is essential that participants are autonomous and have knowledge of directing, filming and editing, as well as have access to their own filming and editing equipment (a camera and a computer equipped with an editing program).

Furthermore, there will be daily Master Classes concerning the principal questions that the filmmaker has to face in the moment of creation. Mr Herzog will look deeply at his methods of working, style and technique.

The director will lead the tempo of the workshop and decide on the topics, recording times and possible locations where the projects will be shot.

For participants to take full advantage of the ten days the Production Company will deliver pre-production work in the field. Participants will be provided with databases containing possible actors, locations, film permission and basic information for the production of each film.

Werner Herzog selected the 15 short films of the 4th Authors’ Workshop

We are pleased to announce the 15 short films selected by Werner Herzog to represent in international festivals the 4th Practical Workshop of authors made in the EICTV of Cuba.
In March 2017 Black Factory Cinema held its fourth workshop of authors where 55 emerging international directors were part of the group of the practical workshop.
For 10 days, the 55 filmmakers, stimulated by the overflowing creativity of the Bavarian director, made individual short films, created around the theme “Through the window” proposed by Werner Herzog as the axis of observation, creation, and exploration of some Rural populations of Cuba.
70 shorts of documentary, fiction, and hybrid formats, were the result of 10 intense days of exchange and creation. The selection of 15 films including the different formats, curated by the same Werner Herzog, will be distributed in several international festivals, with the aim of opening spaces of diffusion for these emerging directors and their new looks.

Schedule

«The script has its own life. And the shooting and the photography have their own rules. Only when someone shoots in a studio, behind closed doors, where everything is absolutely organized and under control, can the script be followed to the letter. But I leave the door open, I leave the windows open to let in anything that I might find fascinating and that could form a part of what I am doing. And thanks to that, the films have more life.».
